Occidental, located in the heart of Sonoma County's redwood groves, was known by many other names over the past century. Situated on the highest point of the old narrow gauge railroad that once hauled the giant redwood logs to the mills, the town has variously been named Summitt, Meeker, and Howard. Now officially Occidental, this is the site of Negri's Original Occidental Restaurant. During the days of the railroad, Negri's Occidental was a stopover for many travelers riding the San Francisco-Eureka "Iron Horse".
